Silver Whisper

Cruising around South America

It’s been a while since I posted… I’ve been travelling round South America after our cruise in Patagonia and it was a fantastic trip – thoroughly enjoyed Buenos Aires (my third visit) and Machu Picchu (second visit – and even better than the first). You can read all about it on my colleague’s tango blog.

There is so much to explore in South America that we plan to go again soon. We joined a couple of fellow tango dancers in Buenos Aires who had just got off a cruise from Santiago to Buenos Aires. Or you can go the other way if you like …. There are a number of ships that do this trip each year, so there is plenty to choose from.

Holland America’s Veendam 21 Night South America Fly/Cruise/Tour Package starts at $6,399 from Sydney.
Departs 10 November 2010
Price includes flights, accommodation, 2-day tour of Iguassu Falls and 12 night cruise. This cruise departs from Buenos Aires – so tango lovers may prefer us to organize a package for them in Buenos Aires so they can enjoy tango before taking their cruise.
This itinerary takes in Montevideo, the Falkland Islands, two days of scenic cruising in the awesome Romanche and Alemania glaciers, Punta Arenas and the Chilean Fjords. You will call at Puerto Montt, the gateway to Chile’s beautiful Lake District before arriving at Valparaiso (the port for Santiago) , a World Heritage city with unique architecture and famous cable cars.
Fjords, Incas & Andes 21 night package
Includes a post cruise extension to Peru featuring Machu Picchu. This trip begins with a flight from Sydney leaving November 13 and flying to Buenos Aires for 2 days before departing for Iguassu Falls. You then fly back to Buenos Aires to board the Veendam for the cruise round Cape Horn to Santiago.
Festive Tango & Ice 23-night package
includes Christmas and New Year onboard.

Silver Whisper, snow and more to come

Today the Silver Whisper arrived at Circular Quay, and tomorrow, Monday, she will depart carrying with her many of my fellow countrymen who have escaped Britain to cruise in luxury through the tropics to Singapore. Her next port of call is Brisbane and from there she will head up to Thursday Island, Indonesia and Singapore where many of the passengers will disembark and fly back to the icy weather that Britain is currently experiencing, along with the rest of Europe. Just for interest I’ve dropped in the pic at left which was taken by my brother on Beachy Head in Eastbourne, in the south of England, just days ago!
Silver Whisper is part of the Silversea fleet. A luxury 5 star ship she has a crew to passenger ratio of 1 to 3, just 194 cabins and an Italian heritage which means her cuisine is outstanding. All-inclusive fares and the little extras make this ship – and her sister ships popular with the discerning over-50 traveller.
The company is about to launch a sister ship to Silver Whisper. The 540 guest Silver Spirit will be launched on Thursday, January 21 in Fort Lauderdale. It is likely that Silver Spirit will visit Australia in 2011…
Ask me for a brochure if you are interested in finding out more about these beautiful ships!

Ships in your port

Bit late this week – at this time of year the ports are so busy with cruise ships. Today I have spent 5 hours on a ship’s visit on board Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas . This is what travel agents do in order to check out the ships without actually sailing on them and it gives them an opportunity to look at the different types of cabins and the facilities on board. More about that to come in the posting on Rhapsody of the Seas.
